About Hazeldene
CQC rating - Good
Registered for 10 and combined with Wantage Road next door, Hazeldene is a large, detached house converted from two semi-detached houses situated just 2 miles to the west of Reading town centre. The home provides support to six male adults, who are more able, with mild to moderate learning disabilities and who may have associated complex needs.
The home has six single bedrooms, all decorated to the service users’ individual tastes, two kitchens, two lounge areas, a dining room, a small quiet/music room and a large garden.
There are separate areas within the home for educational and leisure time activities including a summerhouse and workshop in the garden. However, the need for home-based activities is limited due to most of the service users living in the house attending external activities such as college, work placements, skills training and art and drama groups of which they use public transport. When needed the home has its own transport for other leisure, recreational, educational activities further afield.
Our Philosophy
We offer a valued lifestyle, holistic approach to the care and support offered to individuals in the home. We promote self-help and community integration by encouraging independence and personal achievement, whilst at the same time preserving and upholding individual self-determination, privacy and dignity. All service users are actively involved in decisions about their home life through general house meetings, and all personal choices and decision making regarding the individual is positively encouraged.
Our main aim is to enable people to live as fulfilling a life as possible in a homely community environment. Individuals are supported to carry out the majority of everyday tasks as independently as possible, for example making their own dinners from their planned menus, shopping, all general household responsibilities, learning budgeting skills, etc. The individuals within the home also attend various community-based leisure activities as a group of friends and they are encouraged to develop positive and supportive friendships with their housemates.
People are encouraged to attend external sessions including both educational and work placements. GNVQ courses and ASDAN courses are promoted positively, enabling people to gain qualifications and new skills.
To provide this service we take a holistic, value based approach to ensure needs are met, encouraging independence and personal achievement.
